02/01/2010 - ATM Frauds In the News: How to Protect Yourself
Are you concerned about the recent stories in the news about ATM fraud?
Below are some guidelines to reduce the risk of falling victim.
Be Careful When Selecting an ATM:
-Use a trusted ATM, normally one operated by a bank with bank logos and signage. Be particularly cautious when using a privately operated ATM in locations such as convenience stores or restaurants.
-Select a machine that has security cameras.
-Check the card slot, keyboard and machine for tampering signs. Avoid a machine if the card slot jiggles or there is an overlay in the keyboard or anything looks strange or unusual. If you are not happy with anything, do not use the ATM.
-Avoid using ATM's in a dark or remote place. These machines are more likely to be a target because it is easier for the crooks to tamper with the machine without being noticed. At night only go to a familiar, well-lighted location.
Protect Yourself When Using an ATM:
-Maintain a safe distance from others in line. If you feel unsafe, leave immediately. Call the police if appropriate.
-Do not allow other individuals to distract you or offer help.
-Protect your card and place it immediately back in your wallet.
-When you enter your PIN code, conceal your hand as much as possible. This will thwart shoulder surfers or cameras placed at the ATM to steal your PIN number as you enter it.
-If you not sure whether an ATM is working properly, press the cancel button.
-If you notice something suspicious, report the ATM to your financial institution.
-If you think you may have fallen victim, contact your bank right away. A new ATM card can be created for your protection.
